Occupational hazards in social insurance
Being injured at work can change a worker’s life path in an instant. Here, the role of the social insurance system emerges in protecting their rights and compensating them for occupational hazards they may be exposed to while performing their job. Compensation is not an additional benefit, but rather a statutory right guaranteed by Saudi law to ensure the worker’s job and living stability.
However, the most important question remains: How are occupational hazards compensated? What are the conditions and procedures that must be followed to obtain the full right.
If you have been exposed to an occupational hazard while working or have difficulty obtaining compensation from social insurance, a specialized labor lawyer from the office of Attorney Abdul Majeed Al Rashid will provide you with the legal support necessary to understand your rights, determine the type of compensation due, and strictly follow up on regulatory procedures.
What are occupational hazards?
These are injuries that occur to a worker during or because of work, or on his way from his residence to his workplace and vice versa, or on his way from his workplace to the place where he eats or performs his prayers.
Occupational hazard allowance in social insurance is one of the compensations stipulated in the system and applies to all workers inside Saudi Arabia, whether they are Saudis or foreigners, in accordance with Article 28 of the Social Insurance System.
Conditions for entitlement to occupational hazard allowance
- The injured worker must have been registered with social insurance before the injury occurred.
- The injured worker or his representative must inform the employer within 7 days from the date of the injury or discovery of the disease.
- The employer must notify the General Organization for Social Insurance about work-related injuries within 3 days from the date on which he was notified or aware of the injury.
What are the types of occupational risks in the work environment?
Occupational hazards that may lead to worker injury vary depending on the work environment and the tools used.
The Foundation has developed a table of occupational diseases in social insurance, specifying the cases that are compensated according to the system, which are as follows:
- Diseases resulting from exposure to chemical agents, such as exposure to phosphorus, mercury, pharmaceutical compounds, etc.
- Diseases resulting from physical factors such as hearing loss due to noise, exposure to radiation, or high temperatures or cold.
- Infectious diseases such as hepatitis virus or tuberculosis.
- Respiratory diseases such as exposure to metal dust, lung diseases, etc.
- Skin diseases.
- Muscle injuries such as chronic back or elbow injury.
- Occupational cancer such as skin, lung, etc.

According to Article 31 of the system, the injured worker is entitled to the following compensation:
- Necessary medical care for his condition.
- Daily allowances for temporary incapacity for work.
- Monthly or lump sum compensation in case of total or partial disability.
What is the difference between occupational and non-occupational disability?
Occupational disability is permanent total or partial disability resulting from a work-related injury for which the worker is entitled to compensation.
Non-occupational disability is that which occurs due to something unrelated to work.
What is the risk ratio in social insurance?
Article 35 of the Social Insurance System stipulates how to calculate the value of compensation due to the worker in the event of total or partial disability.
Total occupational disability
A worker with a total disability is entitled to monthly compensation equivalent to 100% of the average monthly wage or salary.
Partial occupational disability
- A worker who suffers a partial disability resulting from a work injury exceeding 50% is entitled to receive a monthly compensation equivalent to multiplying the percentage of this disability by the specified compensation percentage by the total disability.
Such as: 70% × 100% = the compensation to which the worker is entitled in this
- If the worker’s partial disability is less than 50% and he is not more than 40 years old, he is entitled to a lump sum compensation for the injury equal to 60 times the compensation value specified for partial disability exceeding 50%.
- If the worker is over 40 years old, the compensation value must not be less than 36 times the compensation value due and not exceed 165,000 Saudi riyals.
Temporary inability to work
Article 30 of the Occupational Hazards Branch Compensation Regulations stipulates that a worker suffering from temporary disability is entitled to a daily injury allowance for each working day, including holidays, at a rate of 100% of the worker’s wages participating in insurance.
