When an addict or addict applies for treatment on his own (or through one of his ascendants, descendants, spouse, or relatives), the system establishes a clear path and procedures that guarantee his treatment and exempt him from accountability. These procedures are as follows:

Once a request for treatment is submitted, Article 42 stipulates that no criminal proceedings shall be brought against the user or addict. This requires that he hand over the drugs or psychotropic substances in his possession, if any, to the party to which he is applying, or provide guidance to their location. What was handed over or advised about is proven in an official report sent to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

According to Article 50, drug users may be required to visit a psychiatric clinic dedicated to helping them get rid of addiction. When it is decided to release him from the clinic, he must continue to visit the psychiatric clinic to be completely certain of his recovery.

The clinic physician charged with assisting the addict submits a comprehensive report on his condition to the Addiction Case Review Committee, within three months from the date the patient begins his visit to the clinic. Based on the report, the committee decides whether to stop its review or continue it for another treatment period.

As a basic guarantee to encourage addicts to seek treatment, Article 51 stipulates that addicts must be treated with complete confidentiality and that their identity and any information related to them must be kept secret. The regime has imposed a prison sentence of up to three months or a fine of up to thirty thousand riyals on any person concerned who discloses any of this information at any stage of the case.
